# Cambly Adult Platform + Speaking Level Test

**Date**: 2026-04-12
**Method**: Existing Cambly account (from Kids registration), browsed adult platform + took Speaking Level Test
**Scope**: Tutor marketplace, Progress nav, Speaking Level Test flow + results
**Why relevant**: Cambly Adult has features that Cambly Kids does NOT — the delta reveals what's technically possible but not shipped for kids.

---

## 🚨 THE BIGGEST FINDING: Cambly Adult has "Progress" in top nav. Cambly Kids does NOT.

**Cambly Adult top nav**: Home / **Tutors** / Learn / **Progress** / Subscribe

**Cambly Kids top nav**: Tutors / Calendar / Lesson History / Courses / Resources

Cambly Kids has **"Lesson History"** (per-lesson review) but NOT **"Progress"** (longitudinal view). The adult platform DOES have longitudinal progress as a first-class nav item. This means:

> **Cambly's engineering team built a Progress feature but chose not to ship it to Kids.**

**Cambly Adult Progress page content** (from `01-progress-page-achievements.jpg`):
- Header: "Track your progress — After your lessons, check how you're doing with personalized statistics. Unlock these by completing 3 lessons."
- **3 stat cards** (all locked/empty for new user): Average words per minute, Average speaking percent, Average words per lesson
- **Total minutes learning with tutors**: "--"
- **Two tabs**: ACHIEVEMENTS | LESSON HISTORY
- **Achievement badges**: "Trial triumphant — Complete the trial lesson" (with CTA), "Cambly newbie — Welcome! We're so glad you're here." (April 2026)

This is a meaningful progress architecture: quantitative speaking metrics (WPM, speaking %, vocab density) + gamified achievements + lesson history — all in one view. The stats unlock after 3 lessons, creating a progress-gating incentive.

Possible reasons it's missing from Kids:
- Kids product is newer and hasn't caught up
- Kids UX is designed for children (who don't track progress themselves), but forgot parents ALSO need it
- The "entertainment pivot" deprioritized progress tracking for kids in favor of engagement metrics

**Design signal — thesis gold**: *The gap between Cambly Adult (has Progress) and Cambly Kids (no Progress) proves the TECHNICAL feasibility of parent-facing progress in a tutoring platform. The gap is a PRODUCT decision, not a technical constraint. Novakid's Value Hub targets exactly this whitespace.*

## Cambly Adult "Learn" page — self-study ecosystem (NEW, 2026-04-13)

Screenshots `02` and `03` (originally mislabeled as tutor marketplace) actually show the **Learn** page — a self-study hub that Cambly Kids does NOT have:

**Lessons and Courses**: Take a private lesson | Learn in small groups | Explore free courses
**Activities** (7 self-study tools):
1. Speak with CamblyAI (AI conversation partner)
2. Expand your vocabulary
3. Check your grammar
4. Improve your pronunciation
5. Take a speaking quiz
6. Read articles at your level
7. Review your past lessons

**e-Books**: 30 tips for job interviews, Idioms, Phrasal verbs, Professional jargon
**Videos**: Join live lessons with tutors on YouTube

**Design signal**: *Cambly Adult has a full self-study ecosystem (AI conversation, grammar checker, pronunciation practice, reading at-level) that Cambly Kids lacks entirely. Kids get PDFs. This validates Novakid's Game World as a genuine competitive advantage — it IS the "Learn" page for kids, but Novakid could surface Game World activity data in the Value Hub to show parents "your child practiced X between lessons".*

## Cambly Adult tutor marketplace differences

Adult Cambly's "Find a tutor" page is **significantly richer** than Kids:

| Feature | Cambly Adult | Cambly Kids |
|---|---|---|
| Filter bar | Online Now / Availability / Pro / Superstars / Accent / Also speaks / Preferred levels / Industry / Interests | All Tutors / Saved Tutors / text search / Availability / Accent / Other language |
| Tutor card info | Name + accent + rating (97%) + lesson count (4K+) + next availability + level range + expertise tags + description | Name + accent + "OPEN LESSON TIMES" |
| CTA | **"Call now"** (instant lesson start) | "See profile" + Schedule |
| Rating precision | Percentage (97%, 93%, 87%) + lesson count | Percentage only (94%) |
| Pro/Superstar badges | Yes (filter + visible) | No |

**Design signal**: *Adult Cambly's tutor cards pack MORE information density — rating %, lesson count, level range, expertise tags, "Call now" instant CTA. Kids version is stripped down. This validates our dataviz research finding that parents (like adults) want information-dense views, but the Kids product chose to suppress data density. Novakid can bridge: give parents data-density that Cambly Kids doesn't.*

## ⭐ Speaking Level Test — Assessment Baseline Pattern

**This is the most thesis-relevant Cambly artifact.**

### Test flow observed:
1. **"Find your speaking level"** — CTA on adult platform
2. **Question prompts** — spoken prompts requiring verbal response
   - "Question 1: Describe your favorite place to visit. What is it like there?"
   - User speaks into microphone
   - Real-time transcription visible: "would go to Japan because I have never been there before and I find this culture very interesting so I would like to get acquainted with their habits everyday life and umm... things they do !!"
   - **"Listening..."** indicator shows AI is processing speech
   - **"Recording... 21 seconds left"** countdown timer
   - **"Save and Exit"** option for mid-test pause
3. Multiple questions (13 screenshots of test flow)

### Test results:
- **"Nice job, 69da160e07041d5ee4027d5a!"** (raw Account ID again, same polish issue)
- **Level: "Intermediate"** (yellow badge)
- **3-axis scoring**:
  - Grammar: **3/5**
  - Vocabulary: **3/5**
  - Coherence: **3/5**
- **CEFR-like spectrum**: True Beginner → Beginner → **Intermediate** (highlighted) → Upper Intermediate → Advanced
- **"Here's where you are"** — visual position on the spectrum
- **"Recommended for you"** section based on assessed level

### Why this matters for Novakid's thesis

This is the **assessment baseline pattern** from our research thesis, implemented in production:

| Our thesis recommendation | Cambly Adult status | Cambly Kids status |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline assessment at onboarding | ✅ Voice-based level test | ❌ No test (level auto-assigned by age) |
| Multi-axis scoring | ✅ Grammar / Vocabulary / Coherence | ❌ N/A |
| CEFR mapping | ✅ 5-level visual spectrum | ✅ Courses mapped to CEFR (A1→C1) |
| "Here's where you are" positioning | ✅ Visual spectrum | ❌ N/A |
| Recommendations based on level | ✅ Tutor + course suggestions | ✅ Course catalogue (static) |

**Findings**:
1. Assessment baseline is **technically feasible** and **already shipped** in Cambly's product ecosystem — just not for Kids.
2. **3-axis scoring (Grammar / Vocabulary / Coherence)** could be adapted for Novakid's parent-facing progress view. Add a 4th axis (Pronunciation) based on Novakid's micro-skills.
3. Real-time speech transcription during test → this same tech could power lesson-level "what did the child say" summaries (connects to our AI Narrative recommendation).
4. The **"Here's where you are" visual spectrum** is exactly the kind of parent-readable progress view that our 45-persona study found universally desired (Insight 5: "CEFR meaningless without real-world translation").

**Citation for research.html**:
> *"Cambly Adult ships a voice-based level assessment with 3-axis scoring (Grammar 3/5, Vocabulary 3/5, Coherence 3/5) and a visual CEFR spectrum. Cambly Kids does not. The same engineering team that built assessment for adults chose not to ship it for children — a product gap, not a technical constraint. Novakid can implement level assessment at onboarding and track it over time, giving parents the before/after comparison they currently lack."*

### Cambly Speaking Level Test (`speaking-test/` folder — 13 files)
| # | File | Actual content |
|---|---|---|
| 01 | `01-test-intro-find-level.jpg` | "Let's find your English speaking level" intro modal — casual/low-pressure framing, 3 bullet points |
| 02 | `02-ready-to-speak-out-loud.jpg` | "Ready to speak out loud?" — 3-5 min estimate, quiet space needed, one-shot quiz |
| 03 | `03-question1-prompt-mic.jpg` | Q1 prompt: "Describe your favorite place to visit. What is it like there?" — mic CTA, 30-45 sec ideal |
| 04 | `04-question1-recording-21s.jpg` | **Actually shows Gmail inbox** with Cambly Kids email "Find your English speaking level—for free" (kidSAFE badge visible). NOT the recording UI. |

| 07 | `07-question1-feedback-relevancy.jpg` | Q1 feedback continued (scrolled) — **Comprehensiveness** + **Coherence** expanded feedback with "See more" links |
| 08 | `08-question2-feedback-detail.jpg` | Q2 feedback — **Grammar** (subject-verb agreement praise) + **Relevancy** (not directly related to exercise types) + **Coherence** (lacks clear structure), "2 of 3 questions answered" |
| 09 | `09-question2-coherence-feedback.jpg` | Q2 Coherence expanded — full paragraph: "lacks clear structure and organization... could start by clearly stating the types of physical exercises you enjoy, such as running or swimming..." + "Was this feedback relevant?" thumbs |
| 10 | `10-question3-feedback.jpg` | Q3 feedback — **Relevancy** (public transportation answer, mentions dog) + **Vocabulary range** section, "3 of 3 questions answered", "Finish" button |
| 11 | `11-results-intermediate-3axis.jpg` | ⭐ **Results**: "Nice job, 69da160e07041d5ee4027d5a!" — Intermediate (yellow badge), Grammar 3/5, Vocabulary 3/5, Coherence 3/5, 5-level CEFR spectrum (True Beginner→Advanced) |
| 12 | `12-results-pricing-recommended.jpg` | "Recommended for you" — INTERMEDIATE badge, 2 plan cards (1.5 hours/week 5,147 TL/mo, 1 hour/week 3,573 TL/mo), "Included in every plan" colored tiles |
| 13 | `13-results-features-included.jpg` | Features grid: Private lessons, Small group lessons, AI learning tools, 100% native-speaking tutors, 4 bonus lessons. "Thanks! Review your results any time from your dashboard." |

**Per-question feedback axes** (richer than the 3-axis results summary):
- Q1: Relevancy, Comprehensiveness, Coherence (3 axes)
- Q2: Grammar, Relevancy, Coherence (3 axes)
- Q3: Relevancy, Vocabulary range (2 axes visible in capture)
- **Results page**: Grammar 3/5, Vocabulary 3/5, Coherence 3/5 (3 axes aggregated)

The per-question feedback uses **4 distinct categories** (Grammar, Relevancy, Comprehensiveness, Coherence, Vocabulary range) but the final score collapses them into 3. Each per-question feedback includes "Was this feedback relevant?" thumbs up/down — a rare feedback-on-feedback loop.

**Important correction**: Screenshot `04-question1-recording-21s.jpg` is actually a Gmail screenshot showing the Cambly email CTA, not the recording interface. The actual recording UI with transcription is in `05-question1-answer-listening.jpg`.
