# Lingokids — Authenticated App Walkthrough

**Date**: 2026-04-12
**Method**: Real trial subscription in iOS app (paid), 8 screenshots
**Scope**: All 4 main tabs + Parent menu + Progress Reports + Parents Area gate

---

## Key discovery

Lingokids **DOES have parent-facing features** — but they are **app-only, not visible on the web** (lingokids.com shows zero of this). The entertainment-pivot branding on the website masked real product capabilities.

What the app has:
- ✅ **Progress Reports** (Activities completed, Mastery/Skill Achieved, Most Played Subjects, Top Practiced Skills)
- ✅ **Parents Area** (dedicated section)
- ✅ **"Parents only" gate** — birth-year verification instead of PIN (enter 4-digit year — prevents children from accessing, easier than PIN recall)
- ✅ **Add Child** support (multi-child families)

## App architecture (4 tabs)

| Tab | Content | Parent-relevant? |
|---|---|---|
| **Play** | "Your daily picks" activity cards (Health, Exercise, Shapes), "Worlds to explore" themes | Child-facing, but play completion feeds Progress Reports |
| **Theater** | Video content: "Everyday Adventures" (Social Skills 03:02, Curiosity 06:01, Flexibility 02:53), "Baby Bot Knows" series | Educational video library, no progress tracking |
| **Lessons** | "Recommended Lessons" (Learn Together: Welcoming a Sibling, I Can Be a Doctor, Numbers 11-50), "Parent Favorites" section | Structured lessons, completion tracked |
| **PlayTogether** | "Think Together" (Problem-Solving, Shapes, Addition), "Drive Together" | **UNIQUE** — parent+child co-play model, nobody else has this |

## 🌟 Key findings

### L1: Progress Reports structure (empty state captured)

**2-week rolling window** — "Find your kid's progress once they start playing. The progress shown is for the last two weeks."

Two primary metrics:
- **Activities Completed** (count — "0 / No activities completed yet")
- **Mastery / Skill Achieved** ("This is the skill that your child practiced the most, by completing times")

Secondary metrics:
- **Most Played Subjects** (3 colored subject pills)
- **Top Practiced Skills** (ranked #1, #2 skill cards, "Achieved by playing [Game]")

**Design signal**: *Lingokids measures play engagement (games played, skills practiced) NOT learning outcomes (vocab learned, pronunciation improved). This is fundamentally different from what Novakid should build — Novakid has 1-on-1 teacher data, Lingokids has only self-paced play data. The Value Hub must surface teacher+AI data, not just play metrics.*

### L2: PlayTogether = unique co-play model

No other competitor in our walkthrough has a dedicated **parent-child co-play tab**. "Think Together" (Problem-Solving, Shapes, Addition), "Drive Together" — these are **designed for parent participation**, not parent observation.

**Design signal**: *If Novakid's acquisition of Lingokids continues, PlayTogether could become a between-lesson practice model that bridges the Novakid lesson experience with home practice. This is relevant for the Value Hub's "home practice" recommendation.*

### L3: Disney IP partnerships (Lilo & Stitch, Spider-Man)

Content cards show Disney character crossovers — premium IP licensing. Signals Lingokids' positioning as **entertainment-first, learning-adjacent** (vs. Novakid's learning-first, entertainment-supporting model).

### L4: Birth-year gate > PIN gate

**"Parents only / Please enter your year of birth:"** with a numeric pad showing 1-9, 0 and 4 underscores. This is EASIER than Cambly's 4-digit PIN:
- No setup required (parent just knows their birth year)
- No forgotten-PIN recovery flow needed
- Still prevents most children (who don't know parent's birth year)
- Lower friction = more parent engagement with settings

**Design signal**: *For Novakid's Value Hub, birth-year gate is the better UX choice if parent-area access needs to be child-proofed.*

### L5: Lingokids has NO teacher component

Confirmed: all content is self-paced games, videos, interactive activities. **Zero live teaching, zero teacher feedback, zero 1-on-1 interaction.** This makes Lingokids fundamentally different from Novakid (and Cambly Kids and GoStudent).

**Implication for thesis**: Lingokids progress = play metrics. Novakid progress = teacher observations + AI micro-skills + lesson outcomes. The data sources are categorically different, so the dashboard architecture must be too.
