## Downstream findings

The quote corpus below feeds into four downstream analytical layers:

1. **Open coding** — 7 emergent themes, 10 trust-break patterns, 12 concrete parent wants: [`open-coding-analysis.md`](../02-research-inputs/open-coding-analysis.md)
2. **Theoretical grounding** — 9 frameworks (SDT, EVT, JTBD, PEAS, British Council plateau, Hofstede, Baumrind, behavioural economics, dashboard UX): [`theoretical-frameworks.md`](../02-research-inputs/theoretical-frameworks.md)
3. **Archetypes** — 6 emergent JTBD archetypes (Reassurance-Seeker, Auditor, Investor, Navigator, Co-Pilot, Outsourcer): [`archetypes.md`](../02-research-inputs/archetypes.md)
4. **Cultural overlay** — 7 markets × proof-types × Hofstede dimensions: [`cultural-analysis.md`](../02-research-inputs/cultural-analysis.md)

The **7 actionable patterns** (previously framed as "6 design imperatives" during the first audit pass) are now fully specified in `research.html` section 03 — `Parent patterns`. The **12 integrated design implications** organised by the five Information Bridges are in [`synthesis.md`](../02-research-inputs/synthesis.md).

The sections below preserve the original thematic quote-organisation so the evidence remains browsable by theme. Quote attributions and URLs stand as the primary-source archive.

> -- **Nika Ka**, Trustpilot Poland, 5 stars ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakid.pl))

> "Little information each class i feel he is not improving at all."

> "I'm not satisfied at all so far. Topics are very limited. For two weeks, [my child] has been trying to learn five words."
> -- **mavikoltukminderi**, Eksi Sozluk ([link](https://ingilizcetavsiye.com/blog/novakid-cocuklar-icin-ingilizce-egitimi-nde-dogru-platform-mu-novakid-kullanici-ebeveyn-yorumlarinin-incelenmesi))
>
> *[TR original: "Su ana kadar hic memnun degilim. Konular da cok kisitli. Iki haftadir bes kelime ogrenmeye calisiyor."]*

**Pattern**: Parents either celebrate progress in vivid, real-world terms (olympiads, school teacher confirmation, CEFR levels) or report complete invisibility of improvement. There is no middle ground -- no parent says "progress is modest but trackable." The platform offers no vocabulary for incremental gains.

## "I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE REPORTS"

> "There was no accurate assessment done for my kid and also the topics of the classes was very similar and no clear plan sent to us. Also the pre class training was difficult and not funny for my kid he didn't like it and didn't understand it."
> -- **ALFAZANI TALHA**, Trustpilot Global, 3 stars ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakidschool.com?page=2))

> "There is no method that is called LEAD-IN from the teacher. The child experiences great difficulty to understand WHY HE IS DOING this or that during the lesson. Thanks to my good level of English I must repass all the didactic materials before the coming lesson and to explain what she is going to study and why. WHY must I develop interest in my child to follow your course?"
> -- **Margarita**, Trustpilot Italy, 2 stars ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakid.it))

> "The program became much harder... all these phrases, except 'I've got,' were completely new!"

>
> *[RU original: "Programma sil'no uslozhnilas'... vse eti frazy, krome I've got, byli absolyutno novymi!"]*

> "Notifications to parents are always positive. Even if the lesson went badly, everything is rosy pink... when 25 minutes are up, the teacher wraps up in a rush."
> -- **realjaew**, Eksi Sozluk ([link](https://ingilizcetavsiye.com/blog/novakid-yorumlari))
>
> *[TR original: "Veliye gelen bildirimler hep pozitif. Ders kotu bile gecse her sey tozpembe...25 dakika dolunca ham hum saralop dersi bitiriyor."]*

**Pattern**: Parents face three compounding problems: (1) no clear plan communicated upfront, (2) difficulty jumps without warning, and (3) feedback that is uniformly positive regardless of reality. The result is a parent who cannot distinguish a good lesson from a bad one, cannot prepare their child for what is coming next, and has no reason to trust the data they do receive.

---

## "I WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S NEXT"

> "The program was supposed to begin at Level 1 and progress according to the child's ability... I realized that without my intervention, advancement to levels 2 or 3 wouldn't have occurred."
> -- **Nejat**, Sikayetvar.com, complaint ([link](https://www.sikayetvar.com/novakid/novakid-ingilizce-egitiminde-seviyenin-takibi-yapilmamasi-ve-ucret-iadesi-talebi))
>
> *Context: Paid 12,553 TL for 50-lesson 6-month package. Independent English teacher confirmed child stayed at same level throughout. Refund denied.*
>
> *[TR original: "Programin seviye 1'den baslayacagi ve cocugumun seviyesine gore ilerleyecegi soylenmisti... ben uyarmasam seviye 2 ya da 3'e gecmeden ayni sekilde devam edecegini anladim."]*

> "My son's English has improved; he has been continuing for two terms. The teaching style is suitable for pedagogical formation. The only issue is that no placement test is conducted at the beginning of the course, and this aspect could be improved."
> -- **pelma pelma**, Trustpilot Turkey, 5 stars ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakid.com.tr))

> "It's good for kids starting with English, but our 5-year-old already has a good base and the level they could adapt requires reading/writing skills she doesn't have yet. I requested cancellation and they kept stalling to not give it or refund me."
> -- **Maria Angels Fiol**, Trustpilot Spain, 2 stars ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakid.es))
>
> *[ES original: "Esta muy bien para ninos que empiezan con el ingles, pero en nuestro caso tenemos una nina de 5 anos que ya tiene una buena base de ingles y el nivel que se podria adaptar necesita de conocimientos de lecto-escritura que aun no tiene. He solicitado la baja y me estan mareando para no darmela y no devolverme mi dinero."]*

> "It might be good for beginners but not for children who can already speak English fluently. All teachers were just following the lesson plans of the platform which involved drilling super simple sentences without realizing that she is beyond saying 'I am a girl.' She spent 4 lessons on colors and honestly didn't learn anything."
> -- **Giulia Trivero**, Trustpilot Italy, 2 stars ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakid.it))

**Pattern**: The system does not auto-advance levels. Parents who do not manually intervene see their child stuck at the same level for months. Placement tests are absent or inaccurate. The result is a product that promises "personalized progression" but delivers standardized repetition -- and parents have no roadmap to see this happening until it is too late.

---

## "THE VALUE ISN'T CLEAR"

> "The learning system is well thought-through and adapted to kids... I seriously dislike the subscription system -- automatic renewal is the only option... I am fed up and I already blocked future payments."
> -- **Rafal W**, Trustpilot Global, 3 stars ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakidschool.com?stars=3))

> "It might be good for beginners but not for children who can already speak English fluently... Lessons are standardized and teachers don't take into account of the students' level. Highly disappointed keeping in mind that lessons are super pricey -- 20 euros for 25 mins."
> -- **Giulia Trivero**, Trustpilot Italy, 2 stars ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakid.it))

> "Excellent value for money! Our teacher is very skilled and empathetic -- it's the second year of the course for my son."
> -- **Elena B**, Trustpilot Italy, 5 stars ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakid.it))
>
> *[IT original: "Ottimo rapporto qualita prezzo! Il nostro insegnante e bravissimo e empatico, e il secondo anno di corso per mio figlio."]*

> "Zero problems with English at school, absolutely none. Just one lesson a week with a premium teacher -- excellent result."
> -- **Pantyusha5**, kursfinder.ru, 5 stars ([link](https://kursfinder.ru/school/novakid/reviews/))
>
> *[RU original: "V shkole problem s angliyskim net, ot slova sovsem. Vsego odno zanyatiye v nedelyu s premium prepodavatelem -- otlichnyy rezul'tat."]*

**Pattern**: Value perception splits on whether the parent can narrate a concrete outcome. Parents who can point to school grades, fluency gains, or competition results see value even at premium prices. Parents who see standardized repetition at "20 euros for 25 mins" feel cheated. The dashboard's job is to make outcomes visible to every parent, not just the ones whose children happen to show dramatic external signals.

## "I WANT TEACHER CONNECTION"

> "My kid is learning a lot with Novakids. He is improving his English knowledge. But there is one thing that I don't like: they everyday give me feedback, but I can't. I would like to write to the teachers to give them my feedback and I can't do it."
> -- **Carmentxu**, Trustpilot Spain, 4 stars ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakid.es))

> "I think Teacher Liezl W is great at identifying the areas where Emma doesn't understand and then guiding her. I think that's wonderful."
> -- **Tick**, Trustpilot Global, 5 stars ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakidschool.com?page=3))

> "His teacher writes a review right after each lesson so that I know how to support him."
> -- **Pinar**, Trustpilot UK, 5 stars ([link](https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/novakid.com?page=3))

> "My son cried so much and was so upset that they literally left a trauma in our lives."
> -- **Ozge**, Sikayetvar.com (via ingilizcetavsiye.com), complaint ([link](https://ingilizcetavsiye.com/blog/novakid-cocuklar-icin-ingilizce-egitimi-nde-dogru-platform-mu-novakid-kullanici-ebeveyn-yorumlarinin-incelenmesi))
>
> *[TR original: "Oglu oyle cok agladi oyle cok uzuldu ki resmen hayatimiza bir travma biraktilar."]*
>
> *Context: Teacher change caused emotional distress to child.*

> "Inexperienced teachers assign some students the wrong level, and then they get stressed that they are not progressing."
> -- **Jelena I.** (Serbia), SmartCustomer, 1 star ([link](https://www.smartcustomer.com/reviews/novakidschool.com))

**Pattern**: Teacher-child bond is the single strongest retention factor and the single most destructive churn trigger. When the bond works, parents celebrate specific teacher behaviors (identifying weak areas, writing reviews, being empathetic). When it breaks -- through reassignment, inconsistency, or wrong-level placement -- the emotional fallout is immediate and severe. The feedback channel is one-directional: parents receive but cannot respond, making the relationship transactional by design.

## "SCHEDULING IS PAINFUL"

> "Found it impossible to book an available teacher over the weekend... I've requested a refund and to cancel my subscription multiple times, but no one has responded."
> -- **Jeanne Alexandre**, Trustpilot Global, 1 star ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakidschool.com?page=3))

> "Why is the schedule shown only until the end of the next month?... I regularly miss it that I didn't plan enough classes."
> -- **Kotya Karapetyan**, Google Play ([link](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.novakid.student&hl=en))

> "Spend long time in choosing teacher and suitable time, you can't find 1 teacher for your child... too much technical issue during class, I lost many classes."
> -- **salama abdo**, Google Play, 1-2 stars ([link](https://apkgk.com/com.novakid.student))

> "What was advertised and what were delivered are entirely different... While a few teachers have a good accent, their schedules are always fully booked."
> -- **Esra**, Sikayetvar.com ([link](https://www.sikayetvar.com/en/novakid-us/misleading-novakid-package-details-and-poor-teacher-quality))

**Pattern**: Scheduling pain compounds across three dimensions: (1) preferred teachers are perpetually unavailable, (2) the planning horizon is too short (only until end of next month), and (3) there are no reminders, so lessons are forgotten. The system makes parents responsible for managing scarcity without giving them tools to do so.

## "MY CHILD LOVES IT"

> "We've had a wonderful experience with Novakid! The lessons are engaging, the teacher is fantastic, and the materials are interesting. Our children genuinely enjoy each class, and their English level has improved significantly."
> -- **Diana Cohen**, Trustpilot Global, 5 stars ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakidschool.com?page=2))

> "We've been continuing with Novakid for two years now. My child's self-confidence has significantly improved. When we travel abroad, they are able to communicate clearly and express their needs with ease."
> -- **Ozge Gungor Ulug**, Trustpilot Turkey, 5 stars ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakid.com.tr))

> "My 2 kids are having NovaKid courses since more than two years. We are very happy with their progress, after achieving 4 levels, my 12 years old son is already fluent and can communicate easily with American friends."
> -- **Mariem**, Trustpilot France, 5 stars ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakid.fr))

> "A year later, studies with pleasure, almost independently, has good vocabulary, constructs sentences."
> -- **ZULYAen**, kursfinder.ru, 5 stars ([link](https://kursfinder.ru/school/novakid/reviews/))
>
> *[RU original: "God spustya, s udovol'stviyem zanimayetsya, pochti samostoyatel'no, yest' khoroshiy slovarnyy zapas, sostavlyayet predlozheniya."]*

> "My daughter learns while having a lot of fun with her teacher... she has reached a level where she can be accepted into international schools."
> -- **Hale Akalin Tablanlioglu**, Trustpilot Global, 5 stars ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakid.com))

**Pattern**: Happy parents describe outcomes in three registers: (1) emotional confidence ("self-confidence improved"), (2) real-world application (travel, American friends, international school admission), and (3) child autonomy ("almost independently"). None reference platform metrics, dashboards, or data. The strongest positive signal is the child wanting to continue -- "raduyetsya i khochet zanimat'sya dal'she" (is happy and wants to keep studying). The platform's job is to make these stories visible to the parents who are NOT yet seeing them.

## "BILLING NIGHTMARE"

> "We paused the subscription but billing continued for another 4 months. When I tried to cancel my subscription it was practically impossible."
> -- **Rafi Camhi**, Trustpilot Global, 1 star ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakidschool.com?page=1))

> "If the 6-month package is selected by mistake, there is a price difference of approximately $7 per month, and this risk is placed entirely on the user."
> -- **Burcu**, Sikayetvar.com ([link](https://www.sikayetvar.com/en/novakid-us/novakid-billing-system-confusing-and-risky-for-parents))

> "We didn't take lessons for 3 months, but money kept being charged regularly. When we returned -- previous teacher unavailable, 10 available lessons with a native speaker vanished after 2 lessons."
> -- **Dmitry Kiselev**, tutortop.ru, 2 stars ([link](https://tutortop.ru/school-reviews/novakid/))
>
> *[RU original: "3 mesyatsa urokov ne brali, no den'gi skhodili regulyarno. Vernulis' posle pereryva -- predydushchiy prepodavatel' nedostupen, 10 dostupnykh urokov s nositelem isparilis' posle 2 urokov."]*

> "Teaching is poor... they secretly enable auto-payment and illegally charge money!"
> -- **Andrey Svechnikov**, azbukakursov.ru, 1 star ([link](https://azbukakursov.ru/reviews/novakid/))
>
> *[RU original: "Obuchayut plokho... oni taykom podklyuchayut avtoplatyozh i nezakonno spisyvayut den'gi!"]*

**Pattern**: Billing complaints are the most emotionally intense category after teacher-change trauma. The pattern is consistent across all markets: auto-renewal is opaque, cancellation is deliberately difficult, and pausing does not stop charges. Parents who feel financially deceived will not credit the platform with any educational value -- trust destruction in billing erases all perceived learning gains (RU-10, RU-11). This is not a Value Hub problem per se, but billing transparency is a prerequisite for parents trusting any progress data the platform shows them.

---

## "THE DASHBOARD IS INVISIBLE"

Across 128 quotes from 15+ platforms, only **5 parents** (~5%) explicitly mention the parent dashboard, parent account, or progress-tracking interface. The rest describe their experience as if the dashboard does not exist.

**Parents who mention it positively:**

> "I can easily monitor my child's development and see how they are advancing in English."
> -- **Gabriel Bulkin**, Trustpilot UK, 5 stars ([link](https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/novakid.com?page=3))

> "Parent account feature lets me track progress easily; occasional platform glitches occur."
> -- **bia BELLA** (Singapore), PanelPlace, 4.8/5 ([link](https://www.panelplace.com/reviews/novakid-worldwide/3796))

> "I use Novakid for my 11 years old son and both him and me love Novakid!! The feature I like the most is that I can re-watch his classes and follow his improvements :)"
> -- **Juan Ramon de la Torre**, Trustpilot Spain, 5 stars ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakid.es))

**Parents who find it broken:**

> "When I click on the progress button in the bottom menu to see the progress of my child, it automatically launches a permission request for audio recording?"
> -- **Oya Canli**, Google Play ([link](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.novakid.student&hl=en))

> "The platform itself is buggy and incredibly frustrating to use -- I had to enter my child's name and age multiple times."
> -- **Tunde Panczel**, Trustpilot Global, 1 star ([link](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakidschool.com?page=1))

**Pattern**: The dashboard's primary problem is not bad features -- it is invisibility. Parents do not mention it because it does not register as a meaningful part of their experience. The few who find it either praise basic monitoring or hit fundamental UX blockers (audio permission gates, bugs, repeated data entry). The recorded lesson replay feature (mentioned by Juan Ramon, Sladjana W) is the closest thing to a "killer feature" the current dashboard has -- parents use it as a DIY progress-tracking tool.

This is the core design opportunity: the dashboard is a blank canvas, not a broken feature. Most parents have never meaningfully interacted with it.

## Cultural Differences in Progress Framing

From the cross-market Trustpilot analysis (6 regional domains):

| Market | How parents frame "progress" |
|---|---|
| **Turkey** | Confidence + real-world use (travel abroad, expressing needs) |
| **Spain** | Improvement over school English, overcoming shyness |
| **Poland** | CEFR levels (A2), systematic/structured advancement |
| **Italy** | Progress vs. price (highest value sensitivity; ROI-first framing) |
| **Germany** | Social connections with native speakers, peer-level communication |
| **France** | School gap completion ("100% French school" + Novakid = fluent child) |
| **Russia** | Competitive-academic validation (olympiads, "best in class," school grades) |

**Design implication**: A single "progress" metric will not resonate across all markets. The Value Hub should surface progress in culturally relevant frames -- school alignment for France/Russia, real-world use for Turkey/Germany, value-for-money for Italy, systematic milestones for Poland.
