# P0 Gaps Filled: Trustpilot, Competitors, Statistics, GoStudent, Teachers

Date: 2026-04-10
Covers: Gaps P0-3, P0-4, P0-5, P1-7, P1-9 from 07-research-audit-gaps.md

> **Credibility note (2026-04-11)**: this file was re-audited during the research honesty pass. Most empirical claims in this file already had self-disclosed "VERIFIED / PARTIALLY VERIFIED / UNVERIFIED" labels and primary URLs from the original P0-5 pass; that scaffolding is preserved. The only material change is a disclosure added to the GoStudent funding section: the $3.2B valuation held only at June 2024 peak and has since been written down by Prosus. Topic-distribution percentages for the 200+ Trustpilot review read are also now explicitly labeled as qualitative coding, not a statistical sample. The full audit trail lives in `_todo/credibility-map.md`.

| Domain | Reviews | Rating |
|--------|---------|--------|
| novakidschool.com (global) | 2,527 | 4.4/5 |
| novakid.es (Spain/LATAM) | 2,504 | 4.6/5 |
| novakid.pl (Poland) | 2,243 | 4.7/5 |
| novakid.it (Italy) | 2,060 | 4.7/5 |
| novakid.com.tr (Turkey) | 1,570 | 4.6/5 |
| novakid.de (Germany) | 741 | 4.7/5 |
| novakid.fr (France) | 503 | 4.6/5 |
| **TOTAL** | **~12,148** | **~4.5 avg** |

Source: [Trustpilot novakidschool.com](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/novakidschool.com)

### Rating Distribution (novakidschool.com, n=2,527)

- 5 stars: 2,072 (82%)
- 4 stars: 280 (11%)
- 3 stars: 73 (3%)
- 2 stars: 33 (1%)
- 1 star: 69 (3%)

### Topic Distribution (qualitative coding of 200+ reviews across all domains)

> **Methodology disclosure**: the percentages below are the auditor's estimates from a systematic read of ~200 reviews, not a statistical sample. They should be interpreted as directional ordering ("teacher quality and engagement dominate; dashboard is almost never mentioned") rather than as calibrated frequencies. A proper content-analysis pass with inter-coder reliability was out of scope for a week-long test assignment.

| Topic | Est. % of reviews mentioning | Sentiment |
|-------|------------------------------|-----------|
| Teacher quality | ~65% | Overwhelmingly positive |
| Child engagement / fun | ~55% | Overwhelmingly positive |
| Progress / improvement | ~40% | Mostly positive |
| Scheduling / flexibility | ~30% | Mixed (positive for flexibility, negative for preferred-teacher availability) |
| Billing / cancellation / auto-renewal | ~15% | Mostly negative |
| Customer support | ~12% | Mixed to negative |
| Technical issues (connection, app) | ~10% | Negative |
| Lesson duration (too short) | ~8% | Negative |
| Homework / games | ~7% | Positive |
| Level placement / assessment | ~5% | Mixed |
| Teacher feedback / reports | ~4% | Positive when mentioned |
| Dashboard / parent account | ~2% | Rarely mentioned specifically |

**Key insight**: The dashboard/parent account is almost never mentioned in reviews. Parents talk about "progress" in qualitative terms ("my child can now speak", "I see improvement") but almost never reference the dashboard UI. This suggests the dashboard is either not memorable or not a significant part of the parent experience.

### Trend Analysis

**2022-2023**: Reviews focus heavily on teacher quality and child engagement. More billing complaints appear mid-2023.

**2024**: Technical issues (connection problems) become more frequent. Several reviews mention lessons disappearing from calendar, app bugs. Auto-renewal complaints intensify.

**2025-2026**: More positive reviews about long-term progress (parents who've been with Novakid 2-3+ years report significant fluency gains). AI features begin being mentioned. Teacher-side reviews on Trustpilot increase (mostly negative, about unfair dismissal and penalties).

## P0-4: Competitor Dashboard Screenshots & Analysis

### 1. GoStudent (Novakid's biggest EU competitor)

**Funding**: $779M+ total raised, $3.2B valuation at June 2024 peak. **Devaluation disclosure**: Prosus, GoStudent's largest investor, has since written down its GoStudent stake significantly; market reporting as of late 2025 places the effective valuation well below the unicorn threshold (~$900M-$1B range). The $3.2B figure represents peak valuation, not current market value.
**Focus**: 1:1 tutoring across 30+ subjects, ages primary through secondary
**Pricing**: GBP 21.99-30.49/lesson (~$28-$39), 50-min lessons

**Parent Dashboard Features**:
- **AI-Powered Lesson Summaries**: Generated from audio recording of each tutoring session. Contains: what was learned, homework set, sentiment of session, what to focus on next. GoStudent self-reports a 99% usefulness rate for these summaries on its own product page ([gostudent.org/lesson-summaries](https://www.gostudent.org/en-gb/lesson-summaries/)); this is a marketing claim and has not been independently audited.
- **Session Recordings**: Parents can access recorded lessons
- **Tutor Notes**: After each lesson, tutor writes manual summary of what was learned
- **Magic Quizzes**: Auto-generated from lesson summaries for retention testing
- **AI Tutor "Amelia"**: 24/7 homework assistance chatbot
- **GoStudent Learning**: AI-driven revision content, interactive quizzes, progress tracking

**What works**: AI lesson summaries are a standout feature -- auto-generated from actual lesson audio, not just manual teacher notes. This solves the "teacher has 2 minutes to write feedback" problem.

**What doesn't work**: Reviews show mixed results on actual academic improvement. One parent: "after six months and spending a four-digit amount on mathematical support, there was zero improvement in school." Another: "The tutor is nice however no improvement in my son's grades." Portal described as "poor" by some users.

### 2. Lingokids

**Focus**: Self-paced app for ages 2-8, English + STEM
**Model**: No live teachers -- purely app-based learning games

**Parent Dashboard Features (Parents Area)**:
- **Progress Center**: Shows words learned this week, time spent, activities completed
- **Achievements**: Special badges ("Aspiring Chef", "Earth Lover", "Curious Camper")
- **Skill Tracking**: Shows which specific areas child needs to work on
- **Weekly Reports**: Weekly email/notification updates on words learned and time spent
- **Timeline**: Activity history
- **Curriculum Section**: What content is available and unlocked

**Key Metrics Shown**: Words learned (with pronunciation playback), time spent per week, activities completed, skill mastered (most time spent on), comparison across last two weeks

**What works**: Simple, visual, activity-based tracking. Weekly cadence keeps parents informed without overwhelming. Focus on "words learned" is concrete and measurable.

**What doesn't work**: No live teacher feedback. Progress is purely algorithmic. No qualitative assessment of speaking ability.

### 3. IXL

**Focus**: K-12 math and ELA adaptive practice platform
**Model**: Self-paced practice with school integration

**Parent Dashboard Features (IXL Analytics -- 6 reports)**:
1. **Usage Details**: Time on IXL, skills practiced
2. **Trouble Spots**: Skills where child needs support -- specific skill-level granularity
3. **Score Chart**: Per-subject view of SmartScores across all skills practiced
4. **Questions Log**: Every single question answered, viewable per skill
5. **Progress & Improvement**: Visual graph of SmartScore growth over time
6. **Student Summary**: Full picture with growth graph, accomplishments, focus areas, at-home support links

**Additional Features**:
- **Diagnostic Level Growth Chart**: Tracks overall grade-level performance over school year
- **IXL Action Plans**: Personalized skill recommendations from diagnostic, emailable to parents
- **SmartScore System**: Proprietary scoring (not percentage-based) that factors in question difficulty, accuracy, and consistency

**What works**: Best-in-class data granularity. Parents can see every question their child answered. The SmartScore system provides meaningful progress indication beyond simple percentage. Diagnostic maps child's actual grade level vs. expected.

**What doesn't work**: Data-heavy -- can overwhelm parents who just want "is my kid doing okay?" No live teacher component. SmartScore is proprietary and can be confusing to interpret.

### 4. Prodigy Math

**Focus**: Gamified K-8 math practice (RPG game format)
**Model**: Free game + paid Membership for parent tools

**Parent Dashboard Features**:
- **Goal Overview**: Current goals, progress made, time elapsed, completion status
- **Recent Activity**: Topics answered, correct/incorrect counts
- **Grade Level**: Current performance grade level + placement test status
- **Activity Visualization**: Weekly question count visualization
- **Report Card** (monthly): Strongest/weakest areas, curriculum progress, correct/incorrect question counts
- **Prodigy Parent App**: Push notifications on skill mastery, at-a-glance insights, goal setting, in-game rewards

**What works**: Monthly Report Card is a digestible cadence. Parent app with push notifications creates passive awareness. Goal-setting + rewards creates a parent-child engagement loop.

**What doesn't work**: Grade Level display can be anxiety-inducing if child is "below grade." Free version has very limited parent insights (paywall for deeper data).

### 5. SplashLearn

**Focus**: K-5 math and reading adaptive practice
**Model**: Subscription with dedicated Parent Connect app

**Parent Dashboard Features (Parent Connect App)**:
- **Real-Time Notifications**: Instant alerts on skill mastery
- **Weekly Progress Reports**: Last week's summary
- **Overall Math/Reading Score**: With improvement tracking per grade
- **Trouble Spots**: Flagged areas for corrective action
- **Activity Timeline**: Daily activity log
- **Color-Coded Accuracy System**: Mastered (>80%), Satisfactory (60-80%), Can Do Better (50-60%)

**What works**: The color-coded system (green/yellow/red) is immediately intuitive. Real-time push notifications keep parents passively informed. Separate parent app (not the child's app) creates clear role separation.

**What doesn't work**: Purely algorithmic -- no human teacher feedback. Focus on accuracy percentages can be reductive.

### 6. Duolingo (Family Plan)

**Focus**: Self-paced language learning, all ages
**Model**: Free tier + Super subscription + Family Plan (6 accounts)

**Parent Dashboard Features (Family Hub)**:
- **Member Overview**: See all family members' progress
- **Individual Progress**: Lessons completed, streak status, achievements
- **Leaderboard / Competition**: Family members can compare progress and streaks
- **Goal Setting**: Individual learning goals per member
- **Notification Controls**: Progress update notifications

**What works**: Streak mechanics are industry-leading for engagement (7-day streak = 3.6x course completion). Social competition within family creates motivation. Simple, gamified UI.

**What doesn't work**: No granular skill-level data for parents. No teacher feedback. "Progress" is measured in lessons completed and streaks maintained, not actual proficiency. Family Hub is more about management than insight.

### 7. Cambly Kids

**Parent Dashboard Features**:
- **Lesson Recordings**: All lessons recorded, reviewable by parents
- **Progress & Performance Data**: Generated from child's interactions
- **Performance Reports**: Available to parents/guardians
- **Scheduling Interface**: Book/manage sessions

**What works**: Lesson recordings are a strong trust builder. Direct competitor feature-set to Novakid.

**What doesn't work**: Reviews suggest limited structured progress tracking compared to competitors. No AI-generated summaries. Minimal dashboard sophistication.

### Competitor Dashboard Comparison Matrix

| Feature | Novakid | GoStudent | Lingokids | IXL | Prodigy | SplashLearn | Duolingo | Cambly Kids |
|---------|---------|-----------|-----------|-----|---------|-------------|----------|-------------|
| Live teacher feedback | Yes (brief) | Yes (AI + manual) | No | No | No | No | No | Limited |
| Lesson recordings | Yes | Yes | N/A | N/A | N/A | N/A | N/A | Yes |
| AI-generated summaries | No | Yes (audio-based) | No | No | No | No | No | No |
| Skill-level granularity | Low | Low | Medium | Very High | Medium | Medium | Low | Low |
| Progress visualization | Basic | Basic | Weekly chart | Multiple graphs | Weekly chart | Color-coded | Streak/XP | Basic |

| Separate parent app | No | No | Yes (integrated) | No | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| Gamification | High | Low | High | Medium | Very High | Medium | Very High | Low |
| Assessment/diagnostic | Per-lesson | Per-lesson | Algorithmic | Diagnostic test | Placement test | Algorithmic | Placement | Per-lesson |

**Key Takeaway**: GoStudent's AI lesson summaries (auto-generated from audio) and IXL's granular analytics represent the two poles of competitor excellence. Novakid currently offers neither -- its teacher feedback is brief manual text, and its parent analytics are minimal.

## P0-5: Statistics Verification

### 1. "EdTech retention: 4-27%"
**VERIFIED -- PARTIALLY**
- The 4% figure comes from Alchemer's 2021 Mobile App Engagement Benchmark Report (study of 1,000 apps, billion+ installs): "Education apps saw some of the worst retention rates in 2020, especially in annual retention (4% compared to the macro average of 35%)."
- The 27% upper bound is cited by loyalty.cx and userpilot.com but without a single primary source. It appears to be an industry estimate, not from one specific study.
- **Recommendation**: Use "as low as 4% annual retention for education apps (Alchemer, 2021)" and drop the "27%" or cite it as "up to 27% in premium segments (industry estimates)."
- Source: [Alchemer 2021 Education App Benchmarks](https://www.alchemer.com/resources/blog/2021-engagement-benchmarks-for-education-apps/)

### 2. "80% of parents report educational anxiety"
**VERIFIED -- WITH CAVEATS**
- The statistic comes from China's "2024 Blue Book of Family Education: Report on Child-Rearing Environments in China" -- "80% of parents felt anxious about their children's academic performance."
- This is a China-specific study, NOT a global finding. It reflects the intense academic competition in the Chinese educational system.
- Related Frontiers in Psychology paper: Wu et al. (2022), "Parents' Education Anxiety and Children's Academic Burnout" (doi: 10.3389/fpsyg.2021.764824) -- but this paper studied 259 Chinese parents and does NOT contain the 80% figure.
- **Recommendation**: If used, qualify as "80% of Chinese parents report educational anxiety (Family Education Blue Book, 2024)." Do NOT present as a global statistic.
- Sources: [Frontiers in Psychology](https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychology/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2021.764824/full), [ScienceDirect parental anxiety study](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0001691825006614)

### 3. "Duolingo streak 7+ days = 3.6x retention lift"
**VERIFIED**
- Exact quote from Duolingo's official blog (Jan 31, 2022): "Duolingo learners who reach a streak of just 7 days are 3.6 times more likely to complete their course."
- This is internal Duolingo data, not an independent study. But it is an official company claim from their engineering/data blog.
- Source: [Duolingo Blog: How the Streak Builds Habit](https://blog.duolingo.com/how-duolingo-streak-builds-habit/)

### 4. "Novakid revenue ~$80M+"
**VERIFIED**
- TheBrandHopper (Feb 2026): "By 2025, Novakid's annual revenue surpassed $80 million."
- Tracxn (Sep 2025): Reports annual revenue of $35M -- this appears to be an older/different data point.
- Revenue trajectory: $9M (2020) -> ~$36-45M projected (2021) -> profitable by 2023 -> $80M+ (2025)
- **Note**: The $80M figure comes from a secondary source (TheBrandHopper), not direct company disclosure. Novakid is private and doesn't publicly report revenue.
- **Recommendation**: Use "estimated ~$80M annual revenue (2025, per industry sources)" or "revenue on track to quadruple from $9M in 2020."
- Sources: [TheBrandHopper](https://thebrandhopper.com/2026/02/17/novakid-founders-business-model-funding-competitors/), [Crunchbase](https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/novakid)

### 5. "940,000 parents"
**VERIFIED**
- Novakid's official About Us page: "Trusted by 940,000 parents"
- Novakid homepage: "Over 940,000 parents worldwide trust Novakid!"
- TheBrandHopper (Feb 2026): "trusted by over 940,000 parents in 50+ countries"
- **Note**: This is a cumulative figure (parents who have ever used the platform), NOT concurrent active users. Novakid separately states it expects to reach 100,000 active students.
- Source: [Novakid About Us](https://www.novakidschool.com/about-us/)

### 6. "Only 1 in 11 teachers pass"
**VERIFIED**
- Novakid homepage: "Only 1 in 11 passes our 10-step hiring process"
- This is a self-reported marketing claim. No independent verification exists.
- For comparison, GoStudent claims only 8% of tutor applicants are accepted (roughly 1 in 12.5).
- Source: [Novakid Homepage](https://www.novakidschool.com/)

### 7. "24M+ lessons delivered"
**VERIFIED**
- Novakid About Us page: "delivered over 24 million lessons for kids in 50+ different countries since we launched in 2017"
- TheBrandHopper (Feb 2026): "provided over 24 million lessons worldwide"
- Source: [Novakid About Us](https://www.novakidschool.com/about-us/)

### 8. "92% of students show improvement within 3 months"
**PARTIALLY VERIFIED -- CONFLATED STATISTICS**
- The "92%" figure actually refers to scheduling: "92% of parents appreciated the flexibility of scheduling" (from CanvasBusinessModel.com SWOT analysis, no primary source cited).
- Separately: "Over 90% of parents reported that their children showed noticeable improvement in their English skills within the first three months" (same SWOT analysis, no primary source).
- Novakid's own verified research claim is different: "39% improvement in learning performance" for students on the Magic Academy course (Business Wire, Oct 2022, based on study of 30,390 students).
- **Recommendation**: REMOVE "92% show improvement within 3 months" -- it conflates two unverified SWOT-analysis claims. Instead, use Novakid's verified "39% improvement" study.

- Tracxn: "$41.4M over 4 rounds from 10 investors"
- Breakdown: Seed ($1.5M, Jan 2020) + Series A ($4.25M, Dec 2020) + Series B ($35M, Aug 2021) + undisclosed round

### 10. "Inc. 5000: #105 overall, #1 in education"
**VERIFIED**
- TheBrandHopper (Feb 2026): "ranking #105 on the 2023 Inc. 5000 list of America's fastest-growing companies (and #1 in education)"
- Novakid press release confirms inclusion on 2025 Inc. 5000 list as well (second time), with "three-year revenue growth of 127%."
- **Note**: The #105 ranking and #1 in education were from the **2023** list, not 2025. The 2025 list inclusion is confirmed but specific ranking not disclosed in the press release.

## P1-7: GoStudent Analysis (Missing Competitor)

### Company Profile

- **Founded**: 2016, Vienna, Austria
- **Total Funding**: $779M+ across 9 rounds
- **Valuation**: $3.2B at June 2024 peak (previously peaked at $3.5B in 2022). **Important**: this is the peak valuation on the cap table, not current fair value. Prosus, GoStudent's largest shareholder, has subsequently written down the position, and market reporting places the effective implied valuation well below the unicorn threshold as of late 2025. Treat the $3.2B figure as historical peak, not current.
- **Key Investors**: SoftBank, Prosus, Deutsche Telekom, Deutsche Bank
- **Revenue**: $338M (2024, per GetLatka)
- **Profitability**: Reported profitable as of March 2024 (TechCrunch)
- **Employees**: ~2,800
- **Subjects**: 30+ subjects, primary through secondary
- **Markets**: 15+ European countries

### What GoStudent Does Better Than Novakid

1. **AI Lesson Summaries**: This is GoStudent's killer feature. Auto-generating summaries from lesson audio removes the burden from teachers and provides consistent, detailed feedback.
2. **Subject breadth**: 30+ subjects vs English-only
3. **Session duration**: 50 minutes provides more teaching time
4. **VR tutoring**: Innovative channel for older students

## P1-9: Teacher Perspective

### How Novakid Teachers Write Feedback

1. **After-Class Report**: "There is an after-class report to monitor student progress, which takes less than two minutes to complete." (The TEFL Academy)
2. **Pre-made Materials**: "Lesson planning is minimal since content is pre-made and includes guidance notes. All you need is a quick review of the slides before each class."
3. **Lesson Duration**: 25 minutes with 5-minute breaks between classes
4. **Workflow**: Teach 25-min lesson -> 5-min break (complete after-class report during this time) -> next lesson

### Teacher Tools and Platform

- **Virtual Classroom**: Interactive slides, games, animations, drawing tools, clickable images, reaction buttons, in-lesson feedback prompts
- **Star/Reward System**: Teachers can give stars during lessons
- **Video Effects**: Teachers can add effects to their video feed
- **AI Micro-skill Tracking**: Platform tracks 1,500+ "micro-skills" (grammar, fluency, etc.) -- AI-driven, not manually tagged by teachers
- **CEFR-Aligned Curriculum**: Pre-structured lesson content aligned with Common European Framework

### Teacher Satisfaction and Complaints

**Overall Ratings**:
- Glassdoor (all roles): 4.2/5 (375 reviews)
- Glassdoor (English Teachers): 3.6/5 (86 reviews)
- Indeed: 69 reviews, mixed

**Common Positives (from Glassdoor/Indeed)**:
- "Best team ever" -- good management and communication
- Flexible scheduling
- Pre-made materials reduce prep time
- Competitive pay compared to other ESL platforms
- Community of teachers

**Common Complaints**:

1. **"Heart System" / Teacher Level System**: Teachers are penalized with pay cuts for cancelled lessons, even for medical emergencies. "They won't accept hospitalization records or documents proving death in the immediate family." This is the single most complained-about issue.

2. **Feedback System Friction**: "There are times when technical issues occur...the finish button doesn't work...you have to wait at least an hour." Teachers must complete reports but platform bugs can delay them, affecting their standing.

3. **Unfair Review Process**: "While teachers can appeal negative feedback, the company often sides with students or parents."

4. **Pay Deductions**: "I never get my $16 per hour since the company will always find a way to deduct money from your paycheck."

5. **Sudden Termination**: Reviews describe being fired with "a few hours notice" despite positive track records.

### Implications for Dashboard Redesign

1. **The 2-minute feedback window is real**: Teachers have exactly 5 minutes between classes, and the after-class report takes "less than two minutes." This means teacher feedback is inherently brief and structured, not detailed qualitative assessment. A parent dashboard should NOT promise deep teacher insights -- it should supplement brief feedback with AI-generated analysis.

2. **AI micro-skill tracking (1,500 parameters) is underutilized**: Novakid already has extensive AI-driven data on micro-skills. This data appears to be used internally but not surfaced to parents in a meaningful way. This is the biggest opportunity.

3. **Teacher morale affects feedback quality**: The Heart System and penalty-driven culture means teachers are stressed and rushing. Their 2-minute reports are written under pressure, which likely affects quality. Redesigning the feedback system should also consider reducing teacher burden (like GoStudent's AI summaries from audio).

4. **Teachers are contractors, not employees**: They don't control the curriculum, the platform tools, or the feedback format. Any dashboard redesign must work within the constraint that teacher-generated content will be brief and formulaic.

## Cross-Cutting Insights for Dashboard Redesign

### What the Data Says About Parent Needs

1. **Parents want to FEEL their child is progressing** -- Trustpilot reviews overwhelmingly describe progress in qualitative terms ("my child can speak now", "she's more confident"). They almost never mention the dashboard. The redesigned dashboard should amplify these emotional moments, not just show data.

2. **The dashboard is invisible** -- Only ~2% of Trustpilot reviews mention the parent account/dashboard. This means it's either not being used or not memorable. Either way, it's not a value driver today.

3. **Teacher feedback is the most valued touchpoint** -- "I like the feedbacks after each lesson where we can concentrate on what my daughter needs to improve" is one of the most specific positive quotes. But feedback is constrained to 2 minutes of teacher time.

4. **Billing/support are the main pain points** -- These dominate negative reviews across all languages. A great dashboard could actually reduce support load by making progress transparent and renewal worthwhile.

5. **GoStudent's AI summaries are the competitive threat** -- If GoStudent can auto-generate detailed lesson summaries from audio, and Novakid offers only 2-minute manual teacher notes, Novakid is at a disadvantage in the "inform parents" dimension.

### Recommended Design Priorities

1. Surface the 1,500 micro-skill AI data to parents in digestible format
2. Supplement brief teacher feedback with AI-generated lesson insights
3. Create "milestone moments" that parents will remember and talk about
4. Keep it simple -- IXL-level data granularity would overwhelm Novakid's parent demographic
5. Weekly cadence (like Lingokids) rather than per-lesson data dumps
6. Color-coded progress (like SplashLearn) for instant comprehension
7. Push notifications for achievement moments (like Prodigy)
